Sarah Burton Whicker studied at Bennington college, concentrating in puppet fabrication. She has worked in Los Angeles building large scale foam puppets and costumes for clients like Mad TV, and Tenacious D. 

In New York she makes puppets and dioramas for artists and institutions ranging from independent film makers and theatre artists to the American Museum of Natural History. She is a founding member of the gallery space and art collective Horse House and her drawings and comics can be seen at Printed Matter.  In her own work she combines traditional methods of Eastern European marionette making with contemporary ball jointed doll making techniques.
